My Friends Will Be Famous

2 Feb

I’m serious.

I know it’s cute and fun to fantasize about what life would be like in Hollywood and if everyone knew your name and your business and wanted your autograph while you were sitting in Schlotzsky’s eating a sandwich with your agent, but in all honesty, these fantasies seem more like reality for my circle of friends.

If anything, college gave me the greatest social network ever. The education and degree were just bonuses. Because in my circle of friends lies the largest amount of talent that only the state of Texas could hold. I’m friends with writers, bloggers, painters, photographers, graphic designers, fashion experts, and the largest percentage of the pie chart: musicians.

Not just any garage band musicians that find a guitar at Goodwill and think that because they own it, they can play it… well. The musicians I know all have talent that rivals practically everyone signed at Interscope records (I’m looking at you Black Eyed Peas and American Idol contestants!)

Exhibit B:

Exhibit C:

That’s only the tip of the iceberg. I don’t know how I can say this without being pretentious, but we are the next Rat Pack/ Judd Apatow gang. Ok, there is no other way to say that without being pretentious. I’m just excited for the future of not only myself, but of the crazy band of misfits that are my friends family.

I could ramble on for hours and days about all the different talents that each person I’ve come to know and love has, but instead of doing that, I’ll just give you the links (hey, it’s the age of the internet) where you can discover all of the talent that I’ve been so blessed to be in contact with.

The Facebooks:

The Blogs:

The Websites/Businesses(!!)

I really am one of the luckiest people ever to be surrounded by so many talented and vastly different people. I know that because I know all of these people, my artistic side has blown through the roof and I have pushed myself to be better.

If you ever have the chance to meet these celebs of mine, be sure to get their autograph and picture because someday it will truly be worth gushing over.

What happens when one finally see’s his best friend after months of no physical contact? Awkward photo shoot during catch up conversations. Enjoy.

Please note the fantastic design of Miss Bridget From America’s room decor. Pinterest and her eye for style have served her well. Zooey Deschanel would be proud of her.

Happy Sunday, and a happy week to all!

Two Girls, A Guitar, And I’m Not Complaining

3 Oct

So I live below two of the most musically talented women in San Marcos. This is a total blessing because whenever I’m in the mood for a Katy Perry cover or a hum-worthy original, I just walk up 12 very wobbly steps and knock on the door of none other than,

I cannot rave enough about these girls, and not just because I have known them upwards of 3 years and they are two of my best friends EVER! Talent drips off of them much like glitter drips off of a wet drag queen. Tegan and Sara they are not. Let me channel my inner Summer Roberts for a moment to tell you that you’re not going to get two girls with guitars and a whole lot of complaining when you pop them into your Walkman (this is still the 90’s, right?), you’re going to get, as they call it, a bittersweet balance of happiness vs. sadness. One of my favorite summary’s of a band’s mission statement has to be The Drums’. They say that they only write about two things – one is the first day of summer when you and all of your friends are standing on the edge of a cliff watching the sun set and being overcome with all of your hopes and dreams at once. The other is when you’re walking alone in the rain and realize you will be alone forever. Olive & Chuck aren’t this dark, but they’ll hit you hard. Masquerading harsh, fun, honest lyrics under one tiny ukulele and  two big heads of hair, the two give the YouTube Taylor Swifts of this generation a reason to stay in their Jonas-Brother-poster-lined bedrooms. Whether it be a sweet little tune about not being able to get a partner to commit, or an Adele-esque power stance of a hit worthy of playing out through The Hunger Games movie, O&C write a new definition to two girls with guitars. But don’t take my simple words and praises for it, give ’em a listen at their music MySpace (good, it still is the 90’s!), follow them on the Twitter, like ’em on the Facebook, or click play below! You’ll be oh so happy you did.

R.I.P. The O.P.

6 Aug

Tonight is my final night in what will now be formerly known as my old home, The Outpost.

How else am I supposed to honor the awesome roller-coaster of emotion year that this student-living complex offered? DUMPSTER DIVING of course!

One of the greatest things about being a college student is that you have unauthorized holidays like “Moving Week.” It’s basically a week-long Black Friday except that the Target’s and Best Buy’s are traded in for dumpsters and the bargain basement prices are swapped for $ Free. 99.

Even though I am excited to be moved into my new apartment, I am sad to be leaving this once temporary home. As long as I can remember I have wanted my life to mirror a television show. I’ve wanted my How I Met Your Mother, my Friends. With The Outpost I got that.

I lived right below my best friend.

I was part of a gang of characters known as the ‘Sexy Six’ (for about six minutes, but nonetheless, I was a character).

(Top Left: Chandler, Joey, Ross. Bottom Left: Phoebe, Rachel, Monica)

I had sitcom moments such as:

  • That time a sorority girl got drunk and boom-boomed in my living room
  • That time ants invaded the whole of building two and refused to leave for all of spring semester
  • That time Adam invited me to a party and we became total BFF’s (if only in my mind)
  • That time Olive & Chuck had an impromptu concert on their balcony
  • That time we had ‘Fry-day Fridays’
  • That time where a pigeon bat flew around the apartment and pooped on David’s pillow
  • Those times where I felt safe because I could hear the footsteps of some very sexy ladies having pillow fights above me. Those happened, right?
  • Those times where I stayed up ’til dawn and had amazing Christ-centered, school-centered, relationship-centered, TV-centered, life-centered conversations with the greatest friends in the world

The Outpost gave me my Friends era, it gave me a sense of comfort, sanity, excitement, and normality in my life. It gave me some of the dearest memories I will ever have.

So with closets and drawers emptied, and walls caulked and painted I head on to my new home, carrying the memories that The Outpost has packed into my mind.

Sincerely, Singapore

A little shout-out to my best friend, Bridget Cooper.

She has a blog! Not just a whiney life’s-so-hard-being-a-white-girl blog, but rather a blog encompassing all the amazing adventures she’s having in Singapore this summer. I’m so excited that she is living out a dream to travel abroad and that she truly wants to use this opportunity to spread the gospel and grow in her personal relationship with Christ.

I’m sad I can’t be there with her to experience all the awesomeness that she will see in her six weeks across the pond, but I’m so glad I can stalk her through the medium of the internet.

So without further ado, I present to you Sincerely, Singapore.

What’s that old saying?

21 Jun

“When life hands you lemons, make lemonade”

I believe that this saying can be applied to trains as well. I mean, what are two astoundingly attractive college students supposed to do on a summer afternoon besides have an impromptu photo shoot on the train tracks near their apartment complex?

Today my homegirl, Kelsey Manning, sets sail for Nashville, Tennessee. She is about to embark on what I hope will not be her peak journey in life, but rather the start of her rise to fame.

In case you are out of the loop, Miss Manning has been bestowed the awesome gift of an internship at Sirius XM in Nashville. This girl sleeps, eats, breaths and even paints her toenails with music. So I cannot think of a better place for her to spend her summer than in the farmer-tanned arms of Tennessee.

Words alone cannot express how proud I am of this diva. Which is why I will convey all of my emotions with a look…..

All has been said and all has been understood.

Seriously now, this lady has been with me every step of the way since freshmen year. She is the Sabrina Spellman to my Salem Saberhagen, the NeNe Leakes to my Kim Zolciak, the Little Edie to my Big Edie, the Easy to my Mac, the Willow to my Buffy, the cheetah to my plaid, and most importantly, the Val to my Kirst.

All has been said and all has been understood.

I, repeatedly, will say that I cannot think of a person who is more deserving when it comes to getting what they want out of life. This internship in Nashville is only the start of all the great things she will do. I wish her all the luck that little Irish men can carry in their pots-o’-gold and request that she steal me at least one of Dolly Parton’s wigs.

I’ll end with some words she sang to me once as I watched her roll her hair and put her lipstick on in the glass of her boudoir. “We are all born superstars.”

Hopefully that verse will echo true for her this summer, because, baby, she was born this way!

All has been said and all has been understood.

And just cause….

Dear Musical Gods,

12 May

There are times when I often wonder how much more awesome my life would be if I had a soundtrack added to it. I’m talking about a full on walking-through-the-halls-of-Seattle-Grace-Serena-van-der-Woodsen-I-killed-someone-strike-up-The-Kills soundtrack embracing me at all times. I’ve already had a couple of moments in my life where God graced me with the beautiful sounds of música while important events were unfolding:

Exhibit A) That time when Benny Benassi’s, “Satisfaction” was blaring while neon lights were blinding my eyes and a 30 ton carnival attraction nearly smashed me and some friends. I may have exaggerated the whole “smased” bit, but believe me when I say it was all very Final Destination 1,2,3, and “The.”

Exhibit B) That time when I was at the back of an Arcade Fire show and Win Butler yelled for people to rush the stage. I followed master’s rules and ran through the left side of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion to the near front of the stage – all the while “Rebellion (Lies)” was seducing my ears.

Exhibit C) That time when I broke down in my room about not having guidance in my life and iTunes shuffle started playing me “Eventually We Find Our Way” from the Social Network soundtrack.

Ok, maybe that last one was less movie-moment-soundtrack and more God-is-speaking-to-you-Zack-LISTEN!

Needless to say, my life would be more awesome if I could hire Alex Patsavas to just press play every time something remotely interesting happened in my day-to-day life. If she did I would definitely forgive her for the ridiculousness that was the all Kings of Leon episode of Gossip Girl.

Grainy, Glossy, Gold

11 May

In my short 21 years of life I have learned that pictures speak louder than words.

This is a post honoring both the fact that I (finally!) developed my Kodak instant camera and that the people in my life are awesome and deserve to be shown in all their grainy glory.

So without further ado…

Suck It, Terry Richardson

11 May

This will only take one second, I promise.

So I know you all have admired the beautiful pictures of that hot guy at the top of this blog (SECRET: I can read minds!)

Well, if you are wondering who took those beauuutiful picturas of that strapping young chico, it’s none other than my fellow collegiate companion and family friend, Meagan McClendon.

This girl is seriously the next Annie Leibovitz (I put Annie on a photographer pedestal) in terms of how awesome her photographs are and how far she will go. I don’t know where God will take her and her camera next, but I sure do know that the the pictures of the journey are gonna be totally-smashing-hipster-fantastic-quality!

Do yourself the biggest favor ever and check out all her work!
